Barbute Helmet with Bar Grill Visor: 15th-Century Italian Combat Helmet for Buhurt and SCA
The barbute earned its reputation on the battlefields of 15th-century Italy, and this version is built to earn yours in the tournament arena. The classic deep-skulled dome covers the head from crown to jaw, while the riveted bar grill visor protects the face without sealing you behind a wall of steel. The result is a helmet that hits harder fighters keep coming back to: excellent protection, superior visibility, and airflow that closed-visor designs cannot match.
The full riveted chainmail aventail hangs from the helmet’s lower rim, shielding the neck, throat, and upper shoulders from strikes coming in at every angle. No gaps. No exposed skin between helmet and gorget.

Why Choose This Barbute?
The bar grill visor is what sets this helmet apart from solid-visor and open-face designs. The blackened steel bars are individually riveted to the face opening, creating a cage that stops weapon tips and shield edges from reaching your face while leaving your field of vision wide open. You can track opponents at the edges of a melee without turning your entire head. You can breathe freely during a five-on-five scramble in July heat. You can shout commands to your team without your voice dying inside a steel box.
The mirror-polished dome is not just for looks. A polished surface causes weapon strikes to glance and slide rather than bite and catch. The raised medial ridge running from brow to crown adds structural strength along the most common strike line, reinforcing the dome exactly where it needs it most.
The riveted chainmail aventail is the detail that separates a tournament-ready helmet from a shelf display. Butted mail opens under impact. Riveted mail holds. Every ring on this aventail is closed with a steel rivet, forming a curtain of interlocked metal that flexes with your movement and absorbs strikes to the neck and upper shoulders. It hangs from the lower rim of the helmet using vervelles (attachment points), distributing the weight evenly around the skull.
Every helmet is hand-raised and hand-finished by ArmorCulture smiths. The dome is formed from a single steel sheet, the bar grill fitted and riveted to the face opening, and the aventail attached ring by ring. This is artisan-grade work built for fighters who need their gear to survive real combat.

Care & Maintenance
Wipe the polished dome with a dry microfiber cloth after each event. Apply Renaissance Wax or mineral oil every few months to prevent surface oxidation. The blackened visor bars require less upkeep but benefit from a light oil coating in humid climates. Rinse the chainmail aventail in warm water if exposed to heavy sweat, dry thoroughly, and oil lightly to prevent rust. Store in a dry location. See our full armor care guide for detailed instructions.
