Description
Houndskull Bascinet Helmet: 14th-Century Combat Helmet Built for Buhurt and SCA Heavy Fighting
This houndskull bascinet is not a wall hanger. It is a tournament-ready combat helmet designed to take real hits in Buhurt melees, SCA heavy combat, and HMB bouts. The classic pointed-snout visor delivers superior ventilation through precision-drilled breathing holes while deflecting strikes away from the face. Paired with the included green quilted cotton padded coif, it is ready to fight straight out of the box.
Available in three gauges and two steel grades, you choose the exact protection level your ruleset demands.

Gauge & Steel Guide
Choosing the right gauge depends on your ruleset and fighting style.
| Gauge | Thickness | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 16 ga | 1.6mm | SCA heavy combat, light Buhurt, reenactment |
| 14 ga | 2.0mm | SCA, HMB, Buhurt tournaments (most popular) |
| 12 ga | 2.6mm | Full-contact Buhurt, IMCF, maximum protection |
Tempered Steel Upgrade:Â For fighters who need maximum durability, we offer a hardened/tempered spring steel option. Tempered steel resists denting significantly better than mild steel under repeated heavy strikes. Recommended for competitive Buhurt and HMB fighters at national or international level.
Why Choose This Bascinet?
The houndskull bascinet dominated European battlefields for good reason. The elongated snout deflects blows downward and away from the face rather than absorbing them head-on. The perforated breathing holes across the visor provide airflow that flat-faced helmets simply cannot match. After three rounds of melee in summer heat, that ventilation is the difference between staying sharp and gassing out.
The hinged visor locks securely during combat and lifts open between rounds for full airflow and hydration. The pin-pivot hinge system on both sides distributes stress evenly and survives the kind of lateral impacts that pop cheaper single-pin designs.
The included green quilted cotton padded coif is not an afterthought. It wraps the head and neck in layered cotton padding that absorbs shock and prevents the helmet from shifting under impact. The coif ties at the shoulders with fabric laces, anchoring the entire assembly to your gambeson or arming jacket.
Every helmet is hand-formed by ArmorCulture smiths. No two are stamped from a press. The dome is raised from a single sheet, the visor shaped and fitted to the skull, and every rivet set by hand. This is how bascinets were made in the 14th century, and it is how we make them now.
Sizing & Fit Guide
Measure your head circumference at the widest point (around the forehead, above the ears, and across the back of the skull). Measure over the padded coif if possible.

| M | 22-23 in / 56-58 cm |

Care & Maintenance
Wipe down with a dry cloth after every fight or event. Apply a thin coat of Renaissance Wax or mineral oil to prevent surface rust, especially after exposure to sweat or moisture. Inspect rivets and hinge pins before each use. Store in a dry location. Hang the padded coif separately to air out between events. See our full armor care guide for detailed instructions.
